INT'L CUSTOMERS;  Unless your order's >$400 or has at least one item explicitly stating "includes EMS express mail", free tracking is NOT included-you must optionally elect to purchase it (if you want it).  Service ranges 7-90 days and there's absolutely no way to find out what's going on.

We'll happily accept small orders from all over earth, however...

PURCHASE WITHOUT TRACKING = YOU ASSUME ALL RISK OF LOSS

We've no option to add any tracking to regular 1st class int'l mail (domestic packages now get this for free).
So far (>7000 att. @ this writing), overall risk of disappearance is ~0.46%, with Western Europe/Great Britain/Canada closer to ~0.2% and Australia/New Zealand thus far perfect with well over 1000 combined attempts.

I can't offer Registered Mail anymore-it takes too long hand-writing 3 forms, sealing a box with water-activated tape, and queueing up at the post office...time's just too valued.  We instead offer to partially subsidize EMS Express Mail's high cost, which is always a minimum of $38(and moves up based on a weight in a jiffy!).
The option buys speed & safety, but only you can decide if it is worth it to you.  Minimum order value of $100 to elect this option.

Dovo Shears (aka Hair Scissors)

The Superior Shave Home Page

Contact Us

Dovo's shears (a term hair stylists use for hair-cutting-specific scissors) come in a billion varied flavors of length (usually 5", 5.5", or 6"), edge type (corrugated, razor sharp, hollow ground, hollow ground and honed, hollow ground and honed and semi-convex blade surfaces, and finally the ultimate new pinnacle, hollow ground and honed and fully convexed blade planes), with or without finger rest (we only stock 'em with it), with or without adjustment for tension, and color.  They're made in Germany from Swedish steel.

For home use by our average customers, try a 'corrugated' edge model.  I'm not scared to give it a go myself, both on me and my kids, and I've been surprised how easy it is to make a good haircut by merely starting with a topographic map of the hairstyle I want and a thorough braille-like examination of length uniformity with my fingers.  Where the hair's too long, I pinch some between the index/middle finger and bring the scissors just above there...I use a similar methodology to straight razor shave the parts of my face which I can't really see due to some vision eccentricities.

Lastly, Dovo's "Micro Motion" models have a Teflon pressure plate spring-loaded into a little rubber ring.   Not that the 'base' models seem anything to sneeze at, they'd surely work for many a barber I'd imagine, but the Micro Motion does seem to give a notably communicative manner to the way that the blades open and close.

Just so you're aware, Dovo's cutesy little names for the various models don't really mean anything...they just assigned names to their various combinations of attributes because most can remember a name better than they can a seemingly random number.  There is only one standard of "hollow ground and honed", for example; whether the scissor assigned this quality is called "Elitaire" or "Keen Cut" or "Senso Cut", it is always the same function of edge.

    The #16 Models

    Dovo 16506/16556/16606 scissor
Dovo's 16**6 models are their most popular for home use; my wife's been cutting my hair with the 16556 for a few months now and I've no complaints.
The 16**6 series blades are finely corrugated, to allow good sharpness and long-lasting performance.  They have a cutting angle of ~35°, Dovo's standard on traditional models, and are favored by some old-school barbers because you can both cut and hold the hair a second.

    The #48 846 8.25" Barber Shears

    Dovo 48846 scissor
    Dovo 48846 scissor
Dovo's #48846 soldiers on as one of their oldest designs that's still in production, because it is time-tested and hard to improve upon for what it is.  If you've got big, strong hands and are after a barber's shear that can handle lots of real estate without any service, this is your guy..
The 48 846's blades are finely corrugated on one side, to allow good sharpness and the ability to 'catch' the hair for a second, and traditionally ground on the other side.  They have a cutting angle of ~35°, Dovo's standard on traditional models, and this model's tempering of the steel is the 'dramatic' Ice Tempered method.  The edge on these things will likely outlast you if you've been at the business of cutting hair for a president or two.

    Dovo 200706 scissor

The Dovo 200 706 'Coupe Souple' is a classic style 7" stainless shear for professionals.  Its blade edges produce a cutting angle of ~35°, Dovo's standard on traditional models, and not corrugated - this means that they will require regular refreshening (I recommend a small coticule 'slurry stone'), unlike the corrugated model above, but with a 'wedge' style of blade edge, they are extremely easy to hone, even for a novice.  The hollow ground style of cutting edge is still what I'd consider easy to rehone, but then I am very experienced at this sort of thing.  Wtih a tiny coticule slurry stone, you can easily keep the Coupe Souple running at full throttle for decades, even from your first try after heavy use has deteriorated the fine edge condition given by the folks in Solingen.

The Dovo 200 5585 is a modern update of their classic style 5.5" stainless shear for professionals, finished in this cool 'water drops' pattern.

    Dovo 202506 scissor

    Dovo "Keen Cut" 202 506
The Keen Cut 202 506 is a 2-seat, mid-engine sportscar 5" scissor with a hollow ground, razor sharp/honed cutting edge.  You'll get exceptionally-controlled cutting precision that's more immediate than the corrugated or un-honed hollow ground edge, as well as a higher need for resharpening, too.  Try rubbing a wet coticule slurry stone right at the edges to keep them running at full throttle.

Keen Cut's got a half-polished, half-satin finish, and a center screw which can be adjusted with the included tool.

Keen Cut's also supplied with a gorgeous leather sheath, and it can be attached to a belt...apparently the barbers tell me some like to keep little shears such as this at the ready for touch-ups.

Sorry for the stock image above; the 2nd image showing the lovely sheath that's included is from stock, but they wrap these things up in waxy paper that's more complicated than a Rubik's cube.

Keen Cut's only produced in this 5" size, is officially discontinued (not on pricelist, & no more production), but still has some manufactured stock left to distribute to earth...it will be missed a sweet lil pocket rocket.

The Dovo "Black" 233 5585 model adds a step up in sharpness vs the 'base' models shown above, using hollow-ground blades instead of corrugated ones, a reduced cutting angle on the blade edge, as well as a center screw which has adjustable tension.

The body of the Dovo 'Black' is teflon-coated for a distinct feel and appearance.

This model will reach a more refined edge than the corrugated style above, but (as with any knife) the edges also require a bit more maintenance.

It is nice (but not really required) to have an adjustment upon the tension of the center screw, of course.  In the case of this model, you can make an adjustment an the fly, without breaking out any tools.

    The #240 "Elitaire" (4.5", 5", 5.5", & 6" Lengths)

By far our most popular series, the Dovo "Elitaire" comes in 4 lengths and has a hollow ground cutting edge which has been honed and is razor sharp; instead of a straight line going up at a 35° angle from the point where the blade planes intersect, the Elitaire has an overall reduced angle that's flatter at the end and steeper towards the main body of the blade, just like on a straight razor.  You'll get exceptionally-controlled cutting precision that's more immediate than the corrugated or un-honed hollow ground edge.

Like any straight razor, the Elitaire will also eventually require maintenance more quickly than would the two less-refined corrugated or hollow ground (but not razor sharp) edge options above.  I've had great success fiddling with these scissors by intentionally dulling them and then resharpening with a small, long, and thin coticule.

The holes for your thumb and finger are lined with rubber.

The Elitaires also have Dovo's "Micro Motion" feature, which is a Teflon-coated and spring-loaded pressure plate to hold the center screw.  The Micro Motion gives the scissor's action a more responsive feeling, and it seems easier to start of finish action, so that you can expect to be able to control the very end of the cutting edge for trimming.

    Dovo 2455585 scissor
    Dovo 2455585 scissor
    Dovo 2455585 scissor
    Dovo 2455585 scissor

The Dovo "Spectral Red" 245 5585 is part of Dovo's übershears, with razor sharp and hollow ground blade cutting edges along with a semi-convex profile for the blades planes...well, I suppose being somewhatconvex, they're technically no longer blade planes, of course.

This model's red-hued carbon-plasma coating gives an increased glide to the action-as great as the above Elitaire's movement is, this one is that notable bit smoother.  The carbon-plasma coating's also supposed to quickly separate skin from metal to practically eliminate any risk of an allergic reaction from a mishap.

It also has the famed Dovo "Micro Motion" Teflon-coated/spring-loaded pressure plate to hold the center screw, which gives a more responsive feel to the scissoring action and a certain ease to starting and finishing the scissor action.

The convex blade surfaces are what really sets the Spectral Red (and the fully-convexed Master Class below) apart from the rest of the Dovo line.  Convex blade faces allows precise 'slice cuts', where one points the scissor to the ground and opens the scissor but doesn't actually move the blades-instead relying upon the blades' exceptionally thin and sharp cutting edges to trim the hair which points to the ceiling.  Just a smooth thrust of throttle with your hand/arm from ceiling to floor at sharp, low angles to the hair allows thinning by carving.  It is a very modern technique, for a cutting edge scissor design.  You can also cut the upright hair from the top, to knock down some excess density and loosen up the hair.  I've never even seen someone do a 'slice cut', but then I can't exactly afford a studly $$$ haircut, either.  It sure sounds neat.

The Spectral Red 245 5585 is supplied with a bottle of lubricant, adjustment screw, and tin box.

This 245 5585 is essentially the same scissor as the 246 5585 unit below, but a classic shank design instead of the newer 246 5585's 'lowered' profile and slightly offset shank design.

The Dovo "Slide Cut excel" 2000 556 is one of their most sophisticated models, with a razor-sharp hollow ground and honed edge that gives exceptionally-controlled cutting precision that's more immediate than the corrugated or un-honed hollow ground edges (as well as a higher need for resharpening, too).  Try rubbing a wet coticule slurry stone right at the edges to keep them running at full throttle.

Slide Cut's finished in a satin motif, and has a center screw which can be adjusted with the hands-no tools required.

Entirely unique in the Dovo shears catalog, the #2000 556's unique hinge mechanism allows (as the name would imply) the easiest of slide cuts-the pivot point between the two scissor blades travels about a centimeter during the course of a normal cutting action, allowing "slide cuts", which are a sort of combination of the capacities of the conventional lines of shears and the semi-convex blades such as the "Master Class" shown directly above.  Without exclusively cutting via traditional scissoring effect, you can barely move your thumb as you slice through upturned hair.  Perhaps best of all, you'll have adjustable-tension "Micro Motion"; in fact this is the only "Micro-Motion" model with tool-free adjustable tension.

Slide Cut excel's only made in a 5.5" size.

The Centre Touch excels for its handle design.  I can't pretend to be so learned of using a professional stylist's shear to know, but I did parade this model to the stylists I know locally for their more meaningful input.  They seemed to repeatedly say that with the Centre Touch the hand feels at rest even when holding the scissor.  Dovo claims that the shortened, offset thumb shank design allows quick, compact movements that give wide latitude with the blades and excellent control, too-well, even playing with the thing in the office I can see that that's the case.

The Centre Touch 243 608 is supplied with a bottle of lubricant, adjustment screw, and tin box.

    Dovo 01946701 scissor
    Dovo 01946701 scissor

The Dovo 019 46701 is one of Dovo's oldest models, a European barber staple of thinning scissor finished in nickel.

Thinning scissors, in case you didn't know, reduce the density of hair, instead of just reducing their length.  They do, of course, cut hair - but they cut only where the 'teeth' meet the solid edge, so to the eye they just thin.  This model's got 46 teeth.

The 019 46701 is supplied with a plastic pouch.

    • Nickel finish
    • 7" Length
    • 46-Teeth Thinning Scissor
    • Screw-in Finger Rest

The Dovo "Master Class" 544 06085 is Dovo's top class thinning scissor, with razor sharp and hollow ground blade cutting edges.

Thinning scissors, in case you didn't know, reduce the density of hair, instead of just reducing their length.  They do, of course, cut hair - but they cut only where the 'teeth' meet the solid edge, so to the eye they just thin.

The blue-hued carbon-plasma coating gives an increased glide to the action.

    Left-Handed Scissors

    The #244 9555 "Inversion"

    Dovo 2449555 scissor
    Dovo 2449555 scissor
    Dovo 2449555 scissor

The Dovo "Inversion" 244 9555 is Dovo's top class shears for the lefties, with a razor sharp and hollow ground blade cutting edge as well as a convex blade profile.

The "Inversion" has the famed Dovo "Micro Motion" Teflon-coated/spring-loaded pressure plate to hold the center screw, which gives a more responsive feel to the scissoring action and a certain ease to starting and finishing the scissor action.

The convex blade surfaces are what really sets the Inversion apart from the rest of the Dovo line of lefty scissors.

The Inversion 244 9555 is supplied with a bottle of lubricant, adjustment screw, and tin box.

    • Stainless Steel
    • Mirror polished
    • 5.5" Length
    • Screw-in Finger Rest
    • Micro Motion

    • Hollow ground & honed razor-sharp edges
    • Semi-convex blade surfaces for performing "slice cuts"
    • Supplied w/ lubricant, screw adjustment tool, and tin box

    Dovo's Beard/Mustache Scissor
    Dovo "Moustache" 43450 (Nickel Finish)
The Moustache 43450 is a precision 4.5" scissor, and while my personal preference for working nose hair it was born for grooming beards and mustaches.  By any measure of application, essentially you use the very last centimeter or so of scissoring motion to make the cuts.  This is where this kind of scissor really shines.

    The #43454 Beard/Mustache Scissor (Oxidized)

    Dovo #43454 Beard/Mustache Scissor

    Dovo 43454 (Oxidized Steel)
The 43454 is also a precision 4.5" scissor for grooming beards and mustaches, but made of oxidized steel.  Not for steaming in an autoclave, but highly resistant to rust, and it has a distinct look and rubber-grippy feel in the finger holes.  Spiffy.

By any measure of application, essentially you use the very last centimeter or so of scissoring motion to make the cuts.  This is where these kinds of scissor really shine.

    • Oxidized steel
    • 4.5" (114mm) Length
    • No Finger Rest
    • Fixed center screw
    • Corrugated edges
    • Supplied w/ plastic sheath

    Dovo 43456 (Stainless Steel)
The 43456 is also a precision 4.5" scissor for grooming beards and mustaches, but made of stainless steel, and thus can also be used by professional stylists (the above #43450 is only intended for personal use) as it will withstand autoclave sterilization.

By any measure of application, essentially you use the very last centimeter or so of scissoring motion to make the cuts.  This is where these kinds of scissor really shine.

    Dovo #44 & #46 Nose Scissors

    Dovo 44356 Nose Scissor
    Dovo 334356 nose scissor
Dovo #44 nose scissors, curved blades on left and straight on the right
above; the 'curved blades' #44359 model's on the left
    Dovo nose hair scissor 44356

While I'll still admit to preferring a highly-aggressive needle-point style cuticle scissor (such as the #361359 below) for daring to trim the very, very front of the insides of my nostrils, 1) I have a tiny nose and am fighting for tenths of millimeters and 2) I use two hands to do it and still feel that quite uncomfortable poke in the sensitive parts more often than I would if a surgeon friend did it.  I'm sure my wife could do a better job if I could just bring myself to ask her of it...we're just not that close :-)

And as the smiling chap to the left with the attractive olfactory party favor emerging can certainly attest, a specific scissor for cutting your nose (and ear) hair makes a ton more sense.

The dainty Dovo #44 scissors (3.5" length) have compact, straight sides and flared, bulbous scissoring tips, and come in 3 models; the standard matte-finish straight-bladed #44356, the polished #44355 version of the same thing, and the curved-bladed #44359, which has bent scissor blades so that when you're going straight up main street your hand's off to the side of your face a bit.  No matter which you choose, when they close they give wonderful control of a tiny cutting edge area with minimal 'scissoring' pressure needed to cut those nose/ear hairs.  That flared design also 'buys you some space' in there from the actual point of scissoring cut, pushing sensitive tissue out of the way to make safe room for the cutting's occurrence.  That's just what you'd want.

    • 3.5" Length
    • Stainless steel
    • #44356 = straight, satin finish
    • #44355 = straight, polished finish
    • #44359 = curved blades, satin finish
    • Body's profile designed to easily fit in nostrils
    • Angled, curved tips to prevent lacerations

    #46400/46409 Nose Scissors (Nickel)

    Dovo #46 Nose Scissors

The Dovo 46400 (straight tips) & 46409 (curved tips) scissors give you 0.5" of working space from under your nose vs the #4435* models above...unlike the #44s shown above, however, these #46s have a nickel finish rather than stainless steel, and thus cannot withstand autoclave sterilization and are not for professional use.
