Dovo (of which Merkur is an independent subsidiary) makes lots of razors, scissors, and other cutting instruments, but their fine badger brushes are quite underrated.
They use a premium silvertip badger hair that is quite soft, comparable to the top grade from Vulfix, Simpsons, etc. It is luxurious.
Always liked their satiny metal-handled models as an austere alternative to the classic resin-handled British brushes; much heavier in the handles than the British stuff, it is quite easy to build a huge lather by barely flicking the wrist and letting the weight of the handle do the work for you. You'll either like it or you won't; there's one way to know.
True to their form, these brushes are only referred to by product codes, instead of cute monikers like the Brits.
Having visited Dovo/Merkur's production personally, it can be declared here that they are producing these products 100% by hand, nobody's forming their knots or making their handles or anything like this (they did have some sort of 'shaping box' of negative space in which the hair was inserted for the rough draft of the knot shape).
The Brits like eccentricity, unique individualism to each handle, each knot, and all within the supposedly same model of a series. This isn't how any of the Germans do it; they want strict uniformity of the knot and handle. We do show some samples from which you can select, but even when we do not, they are far more consistent than English brushes in weight, loft, etc. etc.
Our measurements listed here are done by hand from the actual stock. We measure the knots by compressing upon the outer diameter with a caliper. These may vary a bit from other distributors, but can be regarded as consistent from brush to brush within this site...and from sample to sample, Dovo's knot are far more consistent than the British brushes.
All Dovo/Merkur brushes stay under 25.5mm for their knots, usually a good bit below that. They're a bit stiffer than the normal British brush, but not nearly as stiff as the stiffest British models.

The Dovo 918052 is a badger brush with a light, smoth-skinned resin handle finished in black. Our stock's consistently been the same through about 15 units thus far, so if the hair changes notably we'll start showing samples. The base is flat so it'll stand on a tabletop. A tad heavier than many Brit near-equivalents in size/knot, but still what I'd term a lighter style of brush.

The Merkur 90120011 is a silvertip badger brush with a very weighty, polished brushed aluminum handle which is partially finished in black. Our sextet of stock's all the same in my eyes. The base is flat so it'll stand on a tabletop, and has a Merkur logo. The knots are lovely compromises, sort of fan-shaped until a broad and wide top area and a medium to density.

The Merkur 90138001 is a silvertip badger brush with a chrome-plated metal handle that's essentially the mate of their popular #38/#39/#12 "Barber Pole" razors. In seeing a dozen of 'em in stock, I don't think they vary enough to warrant individual pics.

The Merkur 90138141 is a silvertip badger brush with a chrome-plated metal handle, and the obvious logical mate to their #38141 blue "Barber Pole" razor. The Merkur 901200102 is a silvertip badger brush with a satiny, matte-finish metal handle, 'matched' to their "VISION" fussy-but-beloved flagship (and now nearly-vaporware) safety razor. Right off the bat versus the Futur 'matched' brushes just below, I like that this one's got a flat bottom, so you've the option of using it w/o a stand. This one weighs right around 66 grams, with a ~20.5x72mm handle and an overall height of ~126mm. $133; Choose From Actual Samples of Stock Below... |

The Merkur 901700002 is a silvertip badger brush with a satiny, matte-finish metal handle, 'matched' to their awesome Futur razor. I've happened to like using the sample of this brush that I sharked quite a lot, it is unique and an excellent handler if you want to try the 'painter's stroke' lathering method..a cold German near-sibling to the Omega 11126, for example. But there's a caveat; I don't know of any brush stand that works well with these guys except for Merkur's own 904781001 (chrome) & 904780002 (matte) twins, and when you factor that nearly-compulsory stand's cost into the brush's cost it is indeed expensive. This model weighs roughly 88 grams, with a ~26.5x72mm handle and a ~21.5x52mm knot. As usual with this individual sampling work, NO RETURNS OR EXCHANGES ACCEPTED. | ||||

The Dovo 918096 is a silvertip brush much in the style of the 'turnback' models below down the page, but with a push-fit assemblage instead of screw threads for the brush head and base. It shares identical satin-finished steel w/ the fine Dovo 499806 razor/brush stand; there's no doubt it is a looker, though you pay a weight and price penalty for that sturdier, highly-refined metal...every sample we've seen is a perfect, fairly bulby knot of silvertip badger hair. The bottom line as I see it; if the knot's quality's your #1 criteria in a traveller, only the Simpsons "The Major" in Super Badger is close, and I'd still give it to this one. The head doesn't screw in or affix to the handle when you're travelling, so if the equivalent silence of the Simpsons "Major" is required, a single spongy packing peanut in there seems to do the trick.
