Merkur sends the razors to us in very 'modest' and thin cardboard. It is wholly expected that your little box wouldn't look good when it arrives to you, just as many of them don't look too crispy when they arrive to us...anyway, if you're giving your Merkur purchase as a gift and want bulletproof assurance you'll get a sample with an outer box we'd deem perfect, it'll cost $5 extra for the packaging and time to worry about you loving that little box's appearance...occasionally, we might deem all samples of a particular razor to have boxes that arrived to us imperfectly, and if this is the case we'll let you know rather than ship such a thing.
If this isn't a gift for someone else, the only bigger complete waste of money I am aware of on this earth is the purchase of "ring tones".
No need to spend this $5 for the Merkur Progress with case, or the Bakelite razor with the case.

Don't be afraid to make one of the three Adjustable Merkur Razors your first razor; it could likely be your last. These offer a varying amount of exposure between the blade and guard. Shave with the grain at the most aggressive setting for you upon the first pass. Then perform an across the grain pass with a less-aggressive setting. If your bold, go for a final against-the-grain pass at a very mild setting of the razor for ultimate closeness. |

Merkur "Vision 2000" (aka "Vision")
| "Because it's there." This is the flagship of the brand. We didn't carry the Vision for a long while, but it seems rather silly to have EVERY OTHER Merkur but this one...Vision/Vision 2000 (now one and the same, there's only 1 model by any name) simply can't be denied its shave. But for the bulbous head maneuvering around the area under your nose, I can firmly state I've never had a better shave from a safety razor than the Vision. The sounds during the shave with the Vision, too, are special. It is like it is a musical instrument! To get this shave that can't be bettered and good looks and sounds to boot, one must deal with
This is a complex razor, with a lot of parts, and to yield that brilliant performance it wants to be disassembled, cleaned with warm soapy water, and reassembled with regularity. Is that 1% better performance vs the Futur from the Vision 2000 worth all that extra dough and upkeep? Only you can answer that for you; personally I don't find it worth the bother, but I can admit to you that in many other instances of my life I've succumbed to the siren song of the "captivating pain in the ass". I've never had a better shave from a safety razor than with Vision, and because of that alone how can it not belong here at 'The Superior Shave'? Overall length of 4.8" (122mm), and weighs a whopping 4.4 ounces (125g). Delivered in tin gift case, with a 10-pack of Merkur's own double-edge blades. ONLY CURRENTLY IN STOCK IN THE 4-PIECE SET SHOWN BELOW, AND NO IDEA WHEN RAZOR ALONE WILL AGAING BE AVAILABLE.

Merkur's Futur is the closest-to-perfect safety razor in my view. Earth's best.
The 'gap' (space between blade and blade guard) is finicky on Futur, more so than the more basic "Progress" and non-adjustables shown below...if the gap appears slightly uneven, it is due to normal tolerances and not a defect. Slight tolerances are quite normal-first and foremost, the chrome plating will not have identical thickness all over the razor due to the curving surface, and this leads to slight differences in the gap across the span of the blade. Futurs are hand-assembled, too, and with hand assembly comes unavoidable expansions of tolerances which nonetheless do not influence function/performance of Futur. I'd still choose it first and foremost in the Merkur line, or over any other more-made-by-machine safety on earth. The blade, once inserted, has a little bit of give around the cut-outs along the center for easier blade loading/unloading. As it is virtually impossible to hold the Futur's "cap" perfectly in balance to center the blade perfectly, the blade's always a little bit more exposed on one side than the other in every sample I test, at least by the calculating nature of my Mitutoyo feeler. Again, this is normal, and happens basically with every safety razor to some degree. If you feel one side's more agressive than the other, try to load the razor with the blade tipping it towards the less agressive side while closing it, to tame the more aggressive side a bit.

Much shorter than VISION and Futur, Merkur Progress takes the basic framework of the most popular Merkur, the 34C (seen below), and adds the functionality of an adjustable gap between the blade and the guard. Adjustment capacity makes for a thicker (12mm main handle diameter), taller (3.5"/88mm versus 3"/75mm on 34C), and heavier (3.1 oz/89 grams vs 2.8 oz/80g on 34C) razor. But Progress' simple 2-piece design has withstood the market for well over 50 years, continuing to sell well because it works. Use the varied adjustments for your passes of the blade, letting Progress' heavy head do the work while gently moving over the skin. Start with an aggressive (higher) number for the standard down-the-face first pass, reduce the setting for an across-the-face pass, and if you're bold go for an up-the-face pass with the dial marked way down in the timid range.

![]() | For Merkur's 2-piece models, a long screw attaches to a threading within the razor; turning the handle's bottom attaches/detaches the razor's head. The slanted guard on the 37C/39C models is not parallel to the razor's edge, forcing a scything motion across skin and focusing initial intensity of cutting energy to a narrow area of blade. 37/39 certainly must be characterized as aggressive razors which mow 'em down quick, but with care they can give amazingly-smooth results in fewer passes for many users. The 11C/12C "open comb style" models, due to the irregular topography created by their comb guard pressing against the skin, specialize in easily springing pesky neck hairs which grow parallel to skin and 'lay down' during shaves. Great on the neck. Pretty intense, though; I'm an old hand at this now and I can't imagine how anyone could possibly describe it as a mild razor. For some, though, this breed of aggression's just the ticket for a tough neck or swirling beard growth pattern that otherwise just never really gets smooth as a baby's bottom. |

The Merkur 34C, aka the "Heavy Duty", is a fixed-head 2-piece razor classic with a closed comb. It is the best-selling product on this entire site, in item qty outselling all else put together! Sadly for many, it must be blamed as the common "gateway drug" to the little world of wet shaving. The 34C's very heavy at the top, with a meaty, stubby, ~3" (75mm) handle. Let the 34C's 2.8 oz (~80g) weight do most of the work for you as you shave and become amazed at its beautiful simplicity. In my humble opinion, far and away the best choice as a first safety razor.

Anyone with neck hairs seeming to grow parallel to the skin after a few days should try the open comb design. The 11C has the same ~2.8 oz weight and ~3" handle as the 34C, but requires a bit more caution. Go slowly. You'll be fine. Sadly, I must report that the 11C's been discontinued, and will only be available a few more months.

The Merkur 37C, aka The Slant, weighs 2.7 ounces (76 grams) and has the same 3" (75mm) overall length as the 34C. It is a version of the 34C Heavy Duty which provides a scything motion for the blade-upon-skin action. The 'bent' guard results in a blade movement with one edge leading the way down the face, focusing cutting energy to less blade real estate. Will your face like it? That'll depend upon your blade's sharpness and how light your touch. I think the Slant's much like an experienced chef whom can use mostly 'slice cuts' with a kitchen blade, as opposed to 'push cuts'; 'slice cuts' put the arm's mass * acceleration arm on a narrow range of metal. 'Push cuts' do the same, of course, but to lots more metal simultaneously upon that being cut. There's times for both. Most friends/relatives I see in the kitchen are push-cutting far, far too often; perhaps I only need associate with more culinary types to change this viewpoint. You can get closer shaves with an identical number of passes with the 37C vs the 34C, or for that matter really any straight-comb fixed-position razor. You can also feel burned by it; some will find results too aggressive, perhaps even slightly uncomfortable. It is a polarizing piece, not for everyone like Mister Vanilla Ice Cream two models above. But I personally feel a light, 1-pass shave with Slant and Feather blades is amongst the best double-edge safety razors achieve.

| Debuting in 2010, the Merkur 45030 is a straight cut, closed comb, 3-piece unit made from Bakelite, a very old type of plastic. We've boiled this unit and scrubbed it hard and it did not care. It is only produced in the burnt-red-with-mottled-black color scheme seen here. Extremely light, it weighs a scant 14 grams. With case and blades, it comes in at a whopping 57 grams. The optional case also accepts Merkur's 11C, 15C, 33C, 34C, 37C, and Progress razors, or classic Gillette Tech/Super Speed razors. Don't expect a mild razor. Though shaving with such a light unit takes adjusting to, it is easily more aggressive than 34C. The #45 Bakelite razor is available alone or packaged with the Merkur plastic safety razor case and a 10-pack of Merkur's double-edge razor blades. Fair warning; the plastic case is ABSURDLY FRAGILE. We MUST use a double-box packing for any reasonable belief of no damage to you, and thus we recommend that you NEVER give this fine little case (functionally, at least) to checked luggage on a commercial aircraft. Because it is plastic, the razor itself is fragile, too, and to ship confidently internationally (where weight penalties are high) we'll have to hit you with a $3 charge. If we can somehow box your order in a way that doesn't involve otherwise-unnecessary weight/packaging penalties to protect this inexpensive product, you'll get a $3 refund without having to ask for it. | |

From Merkur's 2010 newbies, the 44011 is a cool 3-piece with a smooth black handle & sharply-angled base. The 3.8"-long (96mm) smooth handle's thickest part, right in the middle, is about 15mm. This razor's decently heavy at 60 grams (2.1 oz). When you screw in the handle to the head, the angled tip of the base always stops at the same spot. The best way we can describe which way this faces is to say that if the plane of the blade was the floor, the plane of the angled base cuts into the floor at a 45° angle.

Merkur's Travel Razors are 3-piece-design assemblies with handles that also break down into 2 further pieces...come to think of it, they're 4 pieces, aren't they? But they're easy to assemble, and take up very little space in a travel bag. These come in a durable push-button leather case, in either the open comb or straight comb style. Compacted into their case and stuffed with 3 wrapped blades for a trip, these take up just 1.7 x 2.2 x 0.8" (42x55x20mm) of space and weigh only 1.8 oz (50g). About as compact and functional as a travel-specific safety razors could be. Though the #90933000 (collapsing model w/ straight cut) has a blade/handle angle of incidence and exposure of blade identical to many other 3-piece razors in Merkur's lineup, we've had a fervently vocal dissenter whom would like me to label this an ineffectively-mild razor,...I suppose due to its balance? Anyway, he's out there, and while we're not going to refund anyone for a safety razor (I'd imagine you'd prefer to be 100% certain the piece that you'd buy has never potentially touched another customer's hands, let alone their face), I would say that if you want a travelling piece that's aggressive you'll need to either go for the Bakelite #45030 razor 2 models above or get the #90985000 open comb design.

It is actually very valuable for those struggling with a straight razor, though, as its head profile and geometry make it Merkur's best safety razor for getting the hair immediately under the bottom of your nose. Great at the sideburns and above your eyebrows, too. Comes with a single blade, and only its little special blades fit this razor.

The #43450 Beard/Mustache Scissor (Nickel) |

| Dovo "Moustache" 43450 (Nickel Finish) The Moustache 43450 is a precision 4.5" scissor, and while my personal preference for working nose hair it was born for grooming beards and mustaches. By any measure of application, essentially you use the very last centimeter or so of scissoring motion to make the cuts. This is where this kind of scissor really shines.
