Don't venture into str8rzr shaving without a perfect stropping surface. Old razors can always be made functional, but nicked strops frequently cannot. Small irregularities in stropping surfaces can negatively influence affect capacity to realign edges. Stropping's fairly easy. With surface taut from pulling down upon it with your 'off' hand, rub up the strop with your palm. Keeping the spine constantly in contact with the strop, gingerly place razor flat to strop, moving razor away from edge along strop. Edge/spine should be contacting strop during movement, and stroke speed should be consistent throughout (but it can be slow). Uniformity achieves predictably-great results. Edges like uniform speed & pressure during passes of stropping and honing alike. When the razor reaches the top/bottom of the stropping area, flip it over while keeping the spine in contact with the strop, and begin moving towards the other end. The one crucial point: as you flip the razor over, don't move the spine along the strop in the direction which would allow the razor's edge to cut into the strop once it reached the leather. If you simply must have the spine in motion along the strop's edge during the flip, be sure it is in the opposite direction from the stroke you've just completed, which allows blade's edge to meet strop's edge while moving away from the edge. If you mess up and move the spine during the flip that you dig razor's edge into the strop, you'll very likely cut the strop. If not rendering it worthless, you'll still significantly shorten the length of usable leather; don't pass the blade over raised nicks, but you can sand it down so that the area's below everything nearby and it should be okay. There's one other risk-absentmindedly flipping the razor over upon its edge while touching the strop will require re-honing. We now sell more 3" strops than those narrower than 3", but to be fair they both work-with the <3" strops, however, you must incorporate some lateral movement of the edge during the vertical movement of the razor, to allow all parts of edge some mileage on the leather. Here's description of the process for the 90% probability right-handed user using a ~2" width strop;
Most strops have a "prep" side (linen, canvas, cotton, wool, or polypropylene are common) to heat up the blade's edge, remove anything superfluous, and prepare it for stropping. Strop on this stuff just like you do the leather, and always right before using the leather. |
![]() | Dovo White Paste conditions the cotton or linen prep side of 2-sided strops. It is very mildly abrasive to help keep razors sharp. Reminds me of chalk in liquid form. Wipe off any residue on your blade before moving to leather. Linen/cotton also 'pill' a bit w/o this in place, but its main aim's to aid the preparation.

![]() | Dovo Yellow Strop Paste is conditioning fat for the strop leather. While neatsfoot oil's its equal on our horsebutt, English Bridle, & cordovan hides, it is best to use this with Dovo's strops-it works really well and other 'strop dressings' don't play as kindly with their tans. Use extremely sparingly; a wafer thin coat weekly or so is all you'll need forever.

Expensive in the dollar-per-leather ratio but also very, very nice, Dovo's Russian leather strops have officially become tough to source. As we straight razor users reclaim the earth while our fine bovine populations remain the same, costs on these strops have shot through the moon since 2009, and the duration of backorders have become absurd. Their velvety surface is enviable for most common strops, better than any other "Russian" type leather I've tried by a good margin, and I do prefer it to the American-made cowhide and horsebutt strops we sell below (horsebutt's the far better seller @ this point, though). Unlike the American strops, nothing can be replaced on the Dovos; if you cut one, all you can do is sand down the problem spot and try to live with less 'strop owner's pride'. Go slow; it isn't a race. The Dovos are damn nice, I'll give them that. While only you can decide if their level of stropping luxury's worth their cost, it seems anyone whom uses them likes them. |
Below are Dovo's most premium hanging strops, with a padded leather handle sewn directly together with the Russian leather or built upon a swivel ring. The "Russian type" leather used in these models (as well as 188-40002, 189-45002, & 188-40002 below), which is a slice below the cow's skin, is flatter, smoother, and more durable than the base 'cowhide' layer found on their three least-expensive models. These strops' rear hard linen surface is durable and fast, and is used in the normal stropping preparation. Dovo impregnated the hard linen with a bit of their white paste to add a very light sharpening effect. There's likely not enough to cause it, but be sure that no residue from this paste remain on the blade when taken to the leather.

'Russian' type leather, superior in durability and refinement than the
more basic cowhide. It has a nickel-plated swivel hook for hanging,
and a meaty, well-stitched handle at the bottom. 24.5" in overall
length, the stropping area's a generous 2" x ~15.6"; the longest throw
they offer. The strop's rear linen surface should be used in your
normal stropping preparation, with or without the Dovo white paste

the regular leather).

Dovo's basic models below have normal-grade cowhide, while the "Russian" leather strops have the nicest soft-tanned hides you'll see. Dovo's strops are delivered ready-to-use. Beware of imitations, no matter how similar-looking. These are amongst the world's best. The models below are their "standard-style" units, which have a "D" shaped nickel handle at the bottom. I personally prefer this square-shaped-D handle to the fancier sewn/padded handles on the above two flagships, as by pressing my index and middle finger in the 'bottom' of the D of the handle I get a better grip, and I don't mind the mildly uncomfortable feeling of doing it this way.

The Dovo line's more popular, but believe one not given to hyperbole; with the exceptin of the cordovan models (a concession to absurd luxury nobody really needs), the Walkin' Horse strops below are a better value. 100% made in the USA, with USA hides & hardware. There's lots of amateur strops available today on eBay and the like for less, but the hides they use here hard to get, which is key to why we run out of 'em so often. They know how to cut a leather, but they still really look made by hand, which is kind of fitting around here. We try (fail) to stock (in order of easiest-to-acquire hide to most difficult) black cowhide, tan English Bridle, horsebutt, and cordovan-tanned shell; it has unfortunately become rare that you'd see all four varietals at once on this page, but those snobby tanneries are the belles of the ball, and the shoe and belt heavy hitters can certainly provide them with the superior financial security befitting their beauty. |
Walkin' Horse Horsehide Hanging Strops (~26.5" Long, ~17" STROPPING Area)Produced 3" wide with a white cotton 'prep' surface or 2" wide with genuine linen for the preparation side, the "WH" horsehide strops come from the great, perpetually hard to source USA tanner who's the belle of the ball. They have a very mildly 'distressed' look. Though of course you use 'em right away, they'll become better over weeks, and take years to wear out. They like either the yellow-banded tube of Dovo leather fat or some neatsfoot oil (a bit messier, but for which a lifetime supply can often be had at any USA hardware store for less than the cost of one little Dovo yellow tube). 100% Made in the USA from 100% USA components. Not for not trying, but we've not had deep stock of these for months and months and I don't see that ever changing. OUT OF STOCK...I'll predict about March 10th we'll see some more. |

Walkin' Horse 2.5mm English Bridle Leather Hanging Strops (2" or 3" Widths)Though horsebutt's become the sales king of all our strops, "WH"'s vegetable-tanned English Bridle leather strops are their best price/quality combo for my money, especially the 2" with linen on the back. The leather smells wonderful, with a natural amount of oil and wax that needs no regular supplementation (horsebutt's thirsty for neatsfoot oil or Dovo's yellow-band of leather fat). English Bridle has a lot of draw (friction) to it, but unlike latigo leather doesn't feel like stropping on a candle. And while it isn't as tough as ironclad horsebutt, EB's still extremely durable, lasting years and looking gorgeous all the while. Now supplied with the improvement (at least, subjectively, for feel) of webbed woven cotton backing for the 3" model (sometimes we get it in white, sometimes black...look to the add-to-cart button for the truth at the time of stock). |

The Scrupleworks ultra-premium pieces, made by Torolf Myklebust (a Norwegian straight razor enthusiast and professional leather worker) use an oil-tanned cowhide from Norway that's the softest I've encountered. Hard to show photographically, but the grain of these leathers is nearly as tight as the Horween shell (which isn't really a grain). They're not slick like shell, though; in fact, the friction coefficient is more along the lines of Dovo's velour-like 'Russian' leather models. A huge advantage; as the softest and most pliant hide I've seen, it can easily be rolled up for travel without concern.

| Dovo 90-040012 Cushioned Russian Leather Paddle Strop 12.75 x 1.6" overall, with a ~1.5 x 7.75" stropping area, this strop has a hollow core for a springy feel to the Russian leather surface, which has a felt pad underneath it to further accentuate the elasticity and friction. The second image to the left shows the underside of the strop, which consists of a grooved piece of balsa wood that's been covered in Dovo's red paste. The fine paste of 2-4 microns particle size easily restores the sharpness to a razor which has become just a tad bit dull; it isn't for restoring a quite dull razor, you'd need the Dovo green paste for that. Supplied with a little box case for travelling, and weighs just 4.8 ounces (135g) with the little box sheath.

| Dovo 56-195012 Tension-Mounted Russian Leather Strop 12.75 x 1.6" overall with a ~1.5 x 7.5" stropping area, this strop's got a continuous piece of finer Russian leather as opposed to the standard cowhide found on most. The leather's mounted to a bracket which has adjustable tension. You can tighten or loosen the leather as needed by turning the strop's handle, ideally having that leather tight enough to sound like a drum if you tap upon the leather with your finger. The second image to the left shows the underside of the strop leather, which is covered with paste that might appear to be chromium oxide, but is actually Dovo's green paste with a nominal fineness of 6 microns. This green side would be the coarsest and thus initial surface to strop upon when refreshing a razor. You could certainly shave off of it plus a stropping on Russian leather, but you'll get more comfortable results by combining with finer pastes. The internal metal bracket adds a bit to the weight of this one, so it weighs 5.8 oz (165g). Supplied with a little box case for travelling.

You can tighten or loosen the leather as needed by turning the strop's handle, ideally having that leather tight enough to sound like a drum if you tap upon the leather with your finger. The second image to the left shows the underside of the strop leather, which is covered with Dovo's red sharpening paste. This is pretty fine paste (~3 microns average), practical for a quick refresher course once your razor starts to pull just a bit. Adding Dovo's black paste or chromium oxide as finishers afterwards makes this paddle the anywhere-on-the-go sharpening solution for extended travels with our beloved straights; you won't even need a sink. You can certainly shave off of it post-stropping on Russian leather, but you'll get more comfortable results by combining with further finer pastes. Thiers-Issard Deluxe 2-Sided Travel Strop w/ Soft Case A perfect travel pairing, this one's a skinny mahogany strop with coarse and finishing leathers along with a custom fitted case with a slot to hold your straight razor. The strop is a base of beech wood dried in a kiln and stained in mahogany, with a slotted design just like the extra-wide paddle strop seen above. The hollowed-out wood gives the perfect bit of bouncy cushioned feel to the leathers. The textured black hide is for use with your sharpening paste, the reddish-tanned Russian leather side exclusively for finishing and pre-shave stropping...please note that on this particular model, the smooth stropping surface isn't mounted tight; while it does not appear smooth, it does work well thanks to that springy wood. Both leathers are 1.4 x 8.5", and with the strop inside of the case you'll have no risk of the sharpening paste mucking up your adjacent travelling necessities. The case, made from abundantly luxurious leather, reminds me of the hole-in-the-wall places one finds in various parts of Italy, where no-name tanneries easily produce hand made works good enough to embarrass many big fashion names found in snobby Madison Avenue shops. Overall dimensions of 14 x 1.5 x 0.6", it weighs 7.8 oz (220g) together with the case. Available in either a tanned brown or basic black. |
