Théophile Berthon 'Savon À Barbe' Shea Butter and White Clay Shaving Soap (100g)
Théophile Berthon's "Savon À Barbe" firm white disc in tin is prototypical of French shaving soaps favoring shea-and-clay base; the shea gives the hydration, the clay the creamy stability. We're confident if you've tried and liked a few of these (such as the near-ubiquitous L'Occitane en Provence here in the states), you'll find this soap's charms. The disc's formed in such a way as to encourage using its gentle veggie base as the soap one washes their face with before lathering up, and in this regard it is for the author here unsurpassed in its physical design; the firm disc fits naturally to hand and its shape wears evenly, I can tell you, for using it off and on for two years now. No problems with the carry-on at the airport, either, and you'll get a looooong time out of one because it is so milled to get rid of most air and water within. I don't know how to describe the odor to you except to say that I have smelled its profile many times in French bathing products which favor shea and clay, an agreeably-sophisticated standard issue featuring vetiver, woodsy/cedary, and citrus tones from the place so unique and so able to be sweet if only you'll belt out a few sentences of their beautiful prose. The hard soap's very easy to work and stable once whipped up, in fact in our shop we've nothing so hard that is easier, only more or less equals in stability from Golddachs and the Jagger/Mühle twins. Made in France.
